The flavorsome 2019 Quintet retains the trademark Mount Mary elegance, but with a more muscular feel. Dense blackberry and mulberry aromas with gravelly highlights are lifted by a strong seam of dried herbs. There's great upfront impact with chewy tannins and chalky acidity in the driving seat, underpinning a sinewy, cassis-scented finish of excellent length. This is destined to age well.

Full bottle a modest 1,280 g. Mount Mary's bordeaux blend incorporating five varieties. Transparent crimson. Subtle, nuanced nose with lovely balance of ripe fruit and freshness. A very delicate wine that proves Yarra reds are not all about Pinot. Long and refreshing. Might be blown away in a barbie context but it would drink beautifully round a northern European table. No greenness, by the way (remembering Parker's scathing comment about an earlier vintage). So precise and extremely long.

The 2014 Figeac builds on its promise from barrel and delivers a very fulfilling bouquet with red plum, crushed strawberry, cedar and light graphite aromas that I suspect will close down for a period after bottling. (The bottle tasted at the château displayed a subtle incense aroma.) The palate is very well defined with a crisp line of acidity, sorbet fresh in the mouth and fanning out towards its structured, tensile finish. It is a great Figeac, a superb forerunner to the brilliant 2015 and it should not be underestimated. Chapeau winemaker Frédéric Faye and his team. Tasted twice (both in London and at the property) with consistent notes.

The 2014 Figeac has a nose that is a cut above some of its peers, fresher and more vibrant, in for the long haul with raspberry and wild strawberry, autumn bonfire, pencil box and just a touch of meat juices. Lovely! The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, focused and classic in style, with greater body and firmness on the finish than its peers. A wonderful mélange of Left and Right Bank, which is what Figeac essentially is. Recommended. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's 10-Year-On tasting.

40% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc. Another ‘classic’ in style, similar in character to 2008. Still reticent and reserved aromatically but juicy and vibrant with lots of freshness. Round and full on the attack then linear and focused on the finish. Tannins present but refined. Plenty of energy and drive. In the greater scheme of things GV. Good for a few years yet. (JL)

Richly concentrated and full-bodied, it hits all the expected notes-cassis, black olive, smoke, crushed stone, pencil shavings and espresso-then finishes long, with an aristocratic sense of reserve and austerity. Winemaker Jacques Devernois compares it to a woman's black dress, meaning it speaks of elegance and class."

Plush in texture but more restrained than the wines that were already in tank. The fruit is here a bit more medicinal and minty and less sweet at this stage. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and a spicy element. In an awkward phase.

Tasted at Christies' Boardroom dinner from an ex-chateau bottle. The 1995 Haut Brion has a gorgeous bouquet: less opulent than the bottle encountered in March 2011, here offering a more sedate, but somehow "languid" bouquet of tertiary black fruit, cigar box and autumn leaves that are all beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, open for business with fine tension shimmering throughout. It does not quite possess the breeding or clinical focus of the 1996, but it is a generous Haut-Brion, rounded in texture with Morels and tobacco lining the finish. I would broach bottles of the 1995 before reaching for the 1996. Drink now-2025. Tasted November 2013.

This 1995 Haut-Brion was served blind during the summer at a private dinner in Bordeaux, a bottle with perfect provenance. It is a vintage that I have drunk several times, but not since 2013. Deep in colour, the 1995 has plenty of black fruit on the nose, displaying a distinctive briny influence, classic in style with stunning definition. There is something regal about the aromatics. The palate is well-balanced, with fine acidity and black fruit once again, sappy and saline, with an underlying ash-like note emerging as it opens in the glass. Though quite linear towards the tobacco and sous-bois finish, the 1995 conspicuously gains weight and breeding with time. Therefore, I would afford this First Growth four to five hours of decanting as it remains more backward than I imagined.

Just lovely wine, and the only one that was not dominated by a single variety, being a Cabernet/Merlot blend. Excellent lustrous, nuanced ruby.. Clearly a very fine mature wine. Strong liquorice notes (Haut-Brion 'warm bricks' earthiness?) For a second I wondered if it was a 1998 Hermitage. Very complex. Spread across the palate. My guess is that no one dared guess it was a first growth but we were looking for appreciation in the comments box...

There are around 600 bottles of the 2015 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru. It has wonderful transparency and delineation on the nose despite the intensity of the fruit: wonderful mineralité and precision, as if somebody has crumbled some rocks into the wine! The palate is extremely well balanced and poised, intense with a small flotilla of black fruit, yet the acidity cuts through the substance of this wine with effortless ease. There is outstanding penetration and finesse on the finish. This is superb.

Dark ruby-red. Big, rich nose combines blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and chocolate, with its very ripe qualities leavened by a floral element. Very rich, fine-grained and harmonious in the mouth, showing good floral lift to its flavors of dark berries and tropical dark chocolate. This very plush, dense Bonnes-Mares conveys building sucrosité as it opens in the glass yet manages to avoid coming off as heavy. Finishes with building, slightly granular tannins that call for aging, even if the wine could probably be enjoyed today with aeration and the right robust dishes.

One of the top wines in the vintage today, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve le Clos du Caillou tastes more like a mature Bordeaux than a Chateauneuf du Pape. Giving up lots of graphite, smoked meats, olive, tobacco and dark fruits, this beauty is full-bodied, concentrated and textured, with building tannin, yet possesses the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate. The first vintage from this cuvee and coming from 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, it will continue to drink beautifully through 2023+.

Full deep ruby-red. Liqueur-like aroma of plum, raspberry, black cherry and game; faintly porty but vibrant. Thick and supersweet, with deep meat and leather notes lifted by a violety nuance. As lush and seamless as this is, there also excellent definition of flavor. Finishes with firm, ripe tannins and excellent persistence. Vacheron says the tannins are tougher today than they were two months ago, but they seem fine enough to me. This went through its malolactic fermentation and subsequent aging in a new foudre

Although not quite the blockbuster I expected from the barrel samples I tasted, this is, nevertheless, an outstanding effort from a vineyard situated next to the garagiste superstar, Le Pin. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by sumptuous aromas of truffles, chocolate, kirsch, fig, coffee, and toasty oak. Deep and full-bodied with a broad, savory mouthfeel, and a layered finish, this beauty will provide pleasure over the next 15-20 years. Kudos to Jean-Philippe Janoueix!

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners' horizontal, the 2006 Vieux Château Certan remains an outstanding proposition. It has an airy red cherry and raspberry bouquet, a hint of bergamot tea in the background, succinctly defined, even if the fruit needs some encouragement from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. The acidity is well judged, harmonious in the mouth, quite smooth with hints of truffle oil and white pepper towards the composed, quite sensual finish. Give this a couple of more years in bottle and then it should drink well for at least a couple of decades. Tasted April 2016.

Good full red-ruby. Very sexy aromas and flavors of black raspberry, blackberry, roasted coffee, violet and licorice. Lush, silky and highly concentrated, with an utterly seamless texture to the middle palate. Wonderfully, ripe, broad, merlot-based wine; solid as a rock but utterly pliant. Finishes with captivating lingering sweetness, the broad tannins completely buffered by the wine's ripe fruit. I sucked up my bottle of this elixir with great pleasure, but it has the stuffing for long aging.
